Alan Lockhart, who lives in Aughnacloy in Tyrone, arrived home around 2.30pm on Monday to find a silver Audi car parked outside and the back door of the house open.

He said he was shocked to find three men - who he believes were foreign nationals - in his <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" /><st1:Street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Castletown Road</st1:address></st1:Street> home and that he was glad he picked up a shovel on his way into the house.

"I saw three guys coming running up the hall and the front man was a very, very big man. A very dark haired and dark skinned man. They were making a commotion and talking but I didn't understand the language."

The 53 year-old engineer - who suffered bruising and has his arm in a sling as a result of the incident - said he did not want to sound like a hero and that he only did "what anyone else would do" in the circumstances.

"The big man lifted the hall table as I was coming down with the shovel to try and restrain him and he just rammed it up into my face and knocked me down.

"It's hard to remember it all - it happened in maybe a few seconds - I'm still a bit shaken by it all."

The main concern for the family at the minute is the disappearance of the family's pedigree Golden Chihuahua dog, called Bruce. A £500 reward is being offered for anyone who returns the pet.

A police spokeswoman said: "The three burglars fled in a silver Audi which may have been damaged on the passenger side as it stuck a gatepost when speeding from the scene. It is thought one of the intruders was armed with a sledgehammer."

The Police have also appealed for anyone with information to contact police at Dungannon on 0845 600 8000 or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
