Default Daily Mail Article

Did anyone read the article in the Daily Mail Wed Jan 20th 2010 on the dangers of feeding Dry dog food. It was titled Is the food you're feeding your pet killing it? and making your vet rich... pages 28 & 29..
I read it , was just wondering what others opinions on the article were.. I deffo found it a bit worrying..

I read it!!! It said our vets training is all funded by the pet food manfacturers and so there views on pet nutrition is warped and many of those who do realise the insufficientness of the food sell it regardless because it make them money. I'm not sure how I feel about the article, I'd like to think most vets have our animals welfare at the top of their agenda but then again it is a business! There was another article in the Daily Mail a few months ago that highlighted concern about vets putting pets through painful, unnecessary operations inorder to get money even though putting the animal to sleep might be the most humane option. I think everything you do with your pet needs to be well researched if it's food, medical care or training. There are so many conflicting opinions that you've got to make educated decisions and not purely take your vets word on what is best for your pet!! I totally agree with the article in that domestic dogs are 99% wolf and therefore carnivores and yet most dog food is bulked up with grain. Ideally I would feed Skye a raw diet but unfortunately my mum wouldn't let me keep all that raw meet in the fridge and prepared dog food is so much more convenient!! So I'm just getting what I consider to be a good quality dog food (Burns), though it does contain grains it is natural and free from harmful additives!!

Well written. Ive always felt it wrong to just feed "dry" always soak the food. It goes into the gut dry and then soaks up all the moisture there so that the dog has to drink to make up for it. If its pre soaked the dog does not have to drink to do this. Folk will tell you its better for the teeth dry but you can feed raw meaty bones to keep the teeth in good order.

Yet there is absolutely no evidence to back this up, and in fact it causes more plaque and tartar build-up. This then leads to all sorts of problems and will most likely be the cause of the dogs death.

Its not just the teeth claims I have issues with, its the fact I dont think its good digestion wise where the dog has to drink excess amount so the dry food can soak it up inside the gut
