One of the major issues concerning the welfare of dogs is illegal breeders. Unlicensed and unchecked, these ‘puppy farms’ churn out dogs like cheap toys on an assembly line. There is a callous disregard for the welfare of the mother, as she is forced to breed over and over again and, an equal lack of concern is exhibited towards the pups who are not seen as living creatures but as products to boost profits.
We already have an over-abundance of unwanted dogs in this country with most charities permanently full to capacity. 7th Heaven’s intake of dogs at the moment is mainly restricted to rescuing those on ‘Death Row’ from council pounds who are equally full to capacity so the last thing we need are more dogs being bred in abysmal conditions with all the associated, inherent health conditions that implies.
All you have to do is look at how many dogs are for sale in the newspapers or the internet to realise how ludicrous the situation is becoming. Not only that, but quite a few of those dogs will end up in charities like ours or, worse still, lingering in the council pounds waiting for their time to run out when their new owners get bored with them or no longer have time for them. For those that come from illegal breeders it is even worse, as some pups will die before they get to adulthood due the conditions in which they were bred. For those that survive, the various medial conditions that they will be prone to will simply mean their owners will get rid of them even quicker rather than pay vet bills.
In Northern Ireland there appears to be a lack of priority given to animal welfare issues where enforcement is concerned and so these illegal breeders frequently go about their sordid business unchallenged. So, it up to us as individuals to try to put an end to it. If you suspect anyone of being an illegal breeder please call the HM Revenue and Customs on this number and get them investigated for potential tax evasion. Hit these people where it hurts. In their pockets.

Its like hitting my head against a brick wall. Its a crazy world 100,000 dogs are put to sleep every year and no one is fined.
