Marcia Murray-Stoof
Cert. Prof. Dog Training Instructor& Cert. Canine Behaviourist

Aggressive Behaviour in Dogs
Remember that dogs are predators and descendants of the wolf and still show posses' instincts, and behaviour traits that is normal for the dog pile. Thus, growling, snarling, baring teeth, snapping and biting is a part of dog communication. Although aggressive dog behaviour is normal for a dog, it is unacceptable toward humans.
For a dog, there is always a reason for aggressive behaviour. Because humans and dogs have different communication systems, misunderstandings can occur between them.
A person may intend to be friendly, but a dog may perceive that persons behaviour as threatening or intimidating.
Your dog is not psychotic, crazy, or vicious when displaying aggressive behaviour. The most common reason for aggressive dog behaviour is instability in the dominance hierarchy of the dog pack, your family.
Dominant Aggressive Dog Behaviour:
Dominant aggressive behaviour is motivated by a challenge to a dogs social status in the pack, or to control a social interaction.
Dominant aggressive dogs defend their food, dog toys, or other valued objects. Whatever the reason, and whatever the object, the point is that the guarded object is of significance to the dog, and he is willing to fight for it. Even toward you, his owner.
Fear Aggressive Dog Behaviour:
Fear-aggressive dog behaviour is a defensive reaction and occurs when a dog believes he is in danger of being harmed. It is your dogs perception of the situation, not your actual intent, which determines your dogs response. For example, you may raise your arm to throw a toy, but your dog distinguishes this as a threat and may bite you, because the dog wants to protect himself from being hurt.
Protective and Territorial Aggressive Dog Behaviour:
Territorial aggressive dog behaviour is usually associated with defence of property.
Protective aggressive behaviour usually is directed toward people or animals that a dog perceives as threats to his pack. Territorial aggressive dog behaviour includes territorial investigation, territorial marking (urine, scratch marks, etc.), and defensive and offensive territorial aggression.
Redirected Aggressive Dog Behaviour:
A common example occurs when two family dogs become excited, bark, and growl in response to another dog passing by outside their place. (outside the car, outside the restaurant...) The two dogs, confined behind a "wall", may turn and attack each other because they cannot attack the intruder. Predation is usually considered as a unique kind of aggressive dog behaviour, because it is motivated by the intent to obtain food, and not primarily by the intent to harm or intimidate.
Pain Induced Aggressive Behaviour:
This is a natural form of aggressive dog behaviour in the pack that occurs when a dog experiences or is threatened with pain, or physical punishment, for defending itself from being hurt or attacked.
Aggressive dog behaviour is very complex and potential consequences are serious.

Punishment will not help - it makes the problem worse
Punishing a Fear Biter will make him more fearful, and therefore a more aggressive dog. Attempting to punish a dominant aggressive dog is likely to cause him to escalate his behaviour in order to retain his dominant position. This might result in a severe attack. Punishing a territorial, possessive, or protective aggressive dog is likely to elicit additional defensive aggression.

Seek professional help.
An aggression problem will not go away by itself. Working with aggressive dogs requires an animal behaviour specialist who understands animal learning theory and behaviour.

Call 705-436-4158
thedognanny@bell.net www.dognanny.ca
The Dog Nanny©2010

As an animal communicator I get asked this same question often – what is really going on when my dog is pulling ME along during a walk. Many times it isn’t as simple as the dog pulling the human along, but the dog also bites on cloths, chews the leash, wraps the leash around the person or something else, barks at people or other dogs, and generally doesn’t listen to commands at all.

If this sounds like your own situation my primary concern is that you have allowed your dog to treat you disrespectfully in so many ways. Mouthing you, pulling on you and your clothes, grabbing the leash with his mouth, tugging on you, disregarding you and your safety, not listening to you when you attempt to correct him… These are all classic signs of a dog seriously out of control without a calm, assertive, confident leader. If he does all this to you at home and on home territory, then taking him to a high stress, highly stimulating environment will only make things worse, if you are thinking of taking your dog away from home.

He hears part of what you try to tell him, but because you are not backing up your requests with consistent action, he has learned he doesn’t have to listen to you, and what is likely is that he disagrees with you. This has nothing to do with how much he loves you, or how much he knows you love him. He is doing what makes sense to him from his viewpoint.

You need to start over again with the basics by creating a solid foundation of respect and trust. Teach him that he has to listen to you every time, no matter what. You are continually training or untraining him every time you are with him, so make everything you do a game of listen, respect my wishes, and get your reward, and this is how to calm your dog as well.

I know this may be hard for you to hear, but your dog doesn’t need your affection. He needs your direction and discipline (rules, limitations, boundaries, respect, a job to do). Until you do that, he is not safe for you to take your dog for a walk or to take him out.

I suggest getting some guidance with dog training. I recommend the book, The Dog Training Secret or the book, Easy Dog Obedience Training.

Bio: Val Heart – Internationally known expert animal communicator, teacher, author & master healer, Val is called The Real Dr Doolittle™, & Animal Communicator to the Stars.

The causes of hip dysplasia are considered heritable, but new research conclusively suggests that environment also plays a role. To what degree the causality is genetic and what portion environmental is a topic of current debate. Environmental influences would include overweight condition, injury at a young age, overexertion on hip joint at a young age, ligament tear at a young age, repetitive motion on forming joint (i.e. jogging with puppy under the age of 1 year). As current studies progress, greater information will help provide procedures to effectively reduce the occurrence of this condition.
In dogs, the problem almost always appears by the time the dog is 18 months old. Richard Pitcairn theorizes that the hips of young dogs are weakened by heavy vaccination.[4] The defect can be anywhere from mild to severely crippling, and can eventually cause severe osteoarthritis.Hip dysplasia, in dogs can be aided by these 3 acupoints.(Wikipeida.org)

The three acupressure points shown below can be very beneficial for your dog, both as a pain mediator and as benefiting the joint. The acupoints used, GB 29 and 30 and Bl 54, are used in combination and the technique called 'surrounding the dragon' is in play also. This technique is used to literally 'surround' the area of injury and is an effective method of providing analgesia and reducing tissue edema and inflammation.

The picture below shows these acupoints and their location.

To read more about canine hip dysplasia and acupressure, click here.

Ben

I have a Dalmation,Bobbit, who will be 12 years old next month...She was a great companion for Ben and when he passed on we thought she would follow shortly after...she grieved for months but gradually came round and now loves her walk in the park again...

She was a shelter dog about 6 months old when we got her...she was totally hyper..didn't like being outside and would bark the place down till she got in...didn't like the rain to the extent that she would poop at the kitchen door before she would go out to do it...she ate everything in site including a big bowl of fruit I had on the table!...

It was really hard work dealing with her at times but she was so loveable Two years ago she had to go to the vet to have lumps removed and was very ill afterwards...she survived though and has settled down a lot...

The only problem with her now she cries after me...not my hubby...just me!...We had to put a gate at the bottom of the stairs to keep her down as she had fallen a couple of times and now when I am upstairs she cries for me to come down...

We also have 2 cats and Bobbit loves them...They love her as well and she is the first one they go to for grooming and attention!

Let's just say there is never a dull moment in our house

Gosh!!...I can really get carried away here can't I??...Lol

OK...Here ends my first blog

~This is one of many stories which will be in the book I am writing about my girls.~

I know I am dating myself when I mention the Brady bunch but heck I am old and I do not care who knows it. When people ask me to describe the fun personalities of my girls I tell them we live with the Brady girls Marsha, Jan and Cindy aka Mali, Rani and Yuki.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Mali is very much like Marsha. First of all she is the eldest. Mali is very confident and well liked by everyone who meets her. She always carries herself with her head held high, walks with, and air of confidence. She is control of herself and often everything around her. She is a service dog, dog park sheriff, protector of the pack, Mali learned to howl when she was just a pup. She is a quick learner, Like Marsha, the straight A+ student, cheerleader, and most popular girl in school.

Rani is more like Jan in that she came second to our pack. She is a very soft girl and enjoyed being babied by Mali and every one. Belly rubs being her favorite thing still to this day giving her the family nick name of Hussy. Whenever she thinks Mali or Yuki is getting more attention than she is, Rani will vocally complain in a loud puppy like manner, even now at 90+ pounds and to make matters worse Rani cannot howl. Not one little syllable. Just little puppy yips It was cute when she was younger, but now ~causes much eye rolling from humans~ as we hear only Mali, Mali, Mali, Mali, in her whines for attention akin to Jan Brady's whines of Marsha, Marsh, Marsh, from the Brady Bunch.

What Rani does not see is in herself is the confident she has when it comes to her training. In the show ring Rani glides around the ring as if she were floating on a cloud. Her flying trot is a wonder to behold and catches the judges eye every time. She walks with her head held high a smile on her face, and a wag of her tail for everyone she meets. It true she is not the Dog who is dominate in our pack, but who needs to be, when everyone thinks you are cute as a button and wants to just snuggle and kiss you. She is the first to notice any strange sound at night, or something new in the yard, or a butterfly that dares to land in pouncing range. I have to rescind that comment about the howling, as this morning a few days before her first birthday Rani howled for the first time. It started out as a puppy yip, but turned into a howl a real head tipped howl along with the rest of the pack. I swear she was smiling from ear to ear!

Yuki came to live with our pack last in that manner she is the youngest, though she and Rani are really the same age. In many ways she seems less mature. Like Cindy Brady she is shy and sweet. Much to Rani's horror Yuki learned to howl much earlier than she did. Yuki kind of hangs back and watches what the other two older sisters are doing to see if she really wants to take a chance of trying that too. Most often deciding she will only do something if someone else does it with her, before her, or if no one else is watching her, as she is embarrassed if she fails. Her feelings are easily hurt and she does the best ever pouty faces, the kind that melt your heart and make you want to get on the floor and hug her. She is the kinds of girl who is great at manipulating you into thinking she is just a dumb-blond and incapable of learning any new tricks, when in fact she is smart as a whip.

Yuki is huge, I mean humongous girl, but a soft and cuddly should have been a lap dog kind of girl, who chooses to keep her ears down, ~this really frustrates me~ she looks amazing with them up, and I have some pictures to prove she can put them up. This reminds me of Cindy's braces, I will try one more time to brace Yuki's ears, but I do not think it will work. I believe she has total control and I am only going to do it, as I want her to understand we want them up.

Since I types this post I have given up on Yuki's ears and will not brace them again. Sometimes she put up her right ear, and sometimes she put up her left ear, and when the wind blows just right they are both up. When three men came onto our property who were no supposed to be here she put them both up and let them know she meant business as she warned them to leave. I knew she could do it... I give up!

This is my comparison between the Brady Girls and the Madden Girls.

Three days ago, Mali and I were stopped in traffic. I had all the windows rolled down as it was not very hot out and there was a nice breeze. Mali was enjoying flirting with the people in the car next to us when she heard the sirens of a fire truck. The expression on her face was priceless as she snapped her heard around to look at me pleadingly. I swear her eyes were sparkling and she had a grin on her face that ran from ear to ear!

I now had a clue as to why we were all stopped in one place for so long there was either an accident or a fire up a head. Either Mali's look was so convincing or I am a push over but either way, I said okay go ahead and howl. She lifted her chin towards the ceiling of my car and curled her lips into an O starting with a very deep-throated sound, which turned the heads of all the people around us. As the fire truck got nearer, she changed her howl to harmonize with it to a more piercing sound. Thank goodness, my windows were down or my eardrums would not have survived.

The fire truck passed and Mali continued to howl, lowering the pitch back to the deep-throated pitch of earlier. Finally I could barely hear the truck and could see it had stopped and tried to get Mali to stop howling, ~besides how does she breathe howling for that long?~. At first she did not seem to hear me talking to her as she was so clearly enjoying herself. People in the cars in front of me and behind me had gotten out of their cars to see what was going on and not only were they looking up at the fire truck they were looking at my car, ~Mali shhhh now~.

I placed my right hand in the back and touched her left shoulder she lowered her still howling head and looked at me, I know she was at least listening. I told her to stop howling now. Mali placed her muzzle in my hand still howling Wooo wooo wooo but softer than before, I told her she needed to stop no... she Woo woo again quieter woo woo, I could not contain a big smile as it was obvious she really wanted to howl woo wooooo, I put on a stern face, but I know my voice was going to break if I was not careful and I said Enough. One word was all I could manage or I would laugh. She stopped with the WOOs and I told her she was a good girl.

Traffic started to move not to long after, first one side and than the other. We were the other side; and just when we were about to move an ambulance came roaring by and Mali started again WOOOOOooooooo, she did not ask me this time. After all, she had already asked if it was okay to howl in the car just a little while ago. I kept the windows down and droving right past the two cars with the crunched fronts with my dog singing in the back seat. Once we hit 50 miles per hour Mali stopped the singing and all was quiet again.

Recently I had decided to teach the girls fun dog tricks. Mali and Rani know how to do tight circles in front of me. Mali learned how to make a circle around me and to then sit in front of me, and how to bow. Rani learned how to do a double high five, and a low five.

All three girls know how to jump up and take food from my husband's mouth. I had decided I was going to teach them how to crawl but it was just too hard for me to do with my balance issues.

Steve has taken over teaching the trick of crawling for me. It makes me laugh so hard to watch them. I have to hide while I watch or the girls will not work for him. I hear him in the kitchen saying to them. "You will do this for Mama, how come you will not do this for me?" Every time he says Mama, they run to the door to look for me and he has to call them back, saying she is not coming get over here. They finally settle in and start to work, and then I sneak over after I am sure they are working.

Rani is the best crawler out of the three girls, because Steve is offering what she considers a high end treat, chicken jerky. She will crawl half way across the kitchen floor for a small piece of chicken jerky; Mali only half-heartedly crawls, with her tush still up in the air looking more like a foot ball player ready to tackle Steve for the jerky then a dog who is crawling. She has little interest in learning to crawl.

Yuki though she is the funniest, last night the girl knew I was watching because I burst out laughing when she out smarted Steve. She comes up with all kinds of things to get out of learning a new trick. To night she used the I am so sweet look, of lowering her head and ears while flicking her tongue as if she would offer Steve a kiss. She swept that bushy tail of hers softly from side to side, nice an low while wiggling her hips seductively, getting real close and snuggling, anything to take his mind off of whatever trick he want her to do. She is so Steve's delight and stole his heart every time.

Last night he told her to sit, okay she sat. She will sit because that always means she is going to be getting food and he was giving out chicken jerky, then he used the hand sign for down. She offered him her right paw. He tilted his head and beamed a smile at his sweet girl and motioned her down again, she offered him her left paw. I saw him sigh just before motioning her down as he said, "You know this means down." I swear that dog batted her eyes innocently as she slowly lowered to a down.

The night before he had gotten her to crawl and he wanted me to see her do it tonight. He had been so proud of her, his sweet girl had done it for him. So here, I was peeking around the corner at her manipulating him. There she was with her ears back submissively, big brown eyes glistening, do dogs wear lip-gloss?

Any ways, Steve broke a small piece of chicken jerky off the big piece and held it in his good hand and held the larger piece in his other hand close to his chest. He held the piece of jerky out to her close to the floor, then made the sign for crawl and said crawl. She did it again, I know she did... that dog batted her eyes innocently and then looked away like she had no clue. Steve looked at me as if to say maybe she did not see me. I must have rolled my eyes because he huffed and then said CRAWL louder. Yuki stood up and started walk towards him.

Right away he got her back into a down. She hates down, always has .. unless there is mud to lie in, after all she is a white dog and white dogs always seem to love to be in mud! He tried again and she went up on all fours. This happened three or four more times. Each time she managed to get a little closer to him, to Steve and the chicken jerky.

Steve was determined she would do it this time. He knew I could not stand up much longer, I had been on my feet to long without a wheel chair. He held out the small piece of chicken jerky and said, "Crawl". It looked like she was going to do it. It really did. Yuki stretched her neck forward, leaning as if she was going to crawl; but instead, she got up on all fours, snuggled close to her beloved Master, wagging her big tail.

Her soft pink tongue licked his sore arm and hand; as if she knew how badly a torn rotator cuff and tendinitis felt. Then promptly that girl snatched the large piece of chicken jerky turned and went back to her rug; finished with all this crawling business leaving Steve holding the small piece with his mouth open, he could eat it if he wanted.

Not a puppy sound but that of a dog determined to save her people from that terrible mincing monster. She growled even louder as <st1ersonName w:st="on">Steve</st1ersonName> slowed my wheel chair down.

Following is an excerpt from my blog, "My Dog Leads Two Lives." Omar Blue is my Blue Doberman. He's also leader of a ferocious pack and they have started a town called K-9 Town, USA. Not only do they take in the abused and lonely, they also go out and rescue them. Visit http://omarblue.blogspot.com. For now, please read on....

I told you Omar would be leaving soon, and he did. Now I know why. A beautiful but hurt greyhound had arrived at K-9 Town. Her name was Chloe. She didn't know how she got there. She was suddenly just there she said, after wishing so hard that she could be someplace other than where she was.

She told a horrible story of what she had been through where she came from. Sounded similar to what we hear about the way greyhounds are treated after bad people think they are no longer useful. Omar Blue, and his followers promised Chloe she'd never have to worry about her past again. She would stay at K-9 Town, USA forever.

The female Elders wanted to take her into their care right away but decided she'd be better off going with the greyhound family until morning.

Chloe couldn't believe it. She smiled at the pack as she was being gently led away by one of the other greyhounds. Omar later told me that greyhound, Mandrake, and Chloe spend a lot of time together when she's not with the female Elders. Here they are now. They've taken quite a liking to each other. Chloe is now healthy, stronger and happier than she's ever been.

Don't you wish this could be the fate of all greyhounds. There's always room at K-9 Town, USA.
