Dear Members,
An undesirable known as hellen4love was spamming members, she is now completely deleted from the site. A big thank you to all the members who sent in the warning about her, it is really appreciated.
Unfortunately from time to time we get spammers where upon detection they are immediately deleted. We ask all our members to please be vigilant at all times, if at any time you spot anything suspicious please report it straight away where swift action will be taken.
Thank you again and well done to everyone who alerted us about this spammer, I am very sorry if it caused you any inconvenience.
K9 Regards
Neil

We hope the classifieds section is a success, and to help in that cause here are a few things you should know.
If you see a listing that breaks these rules before I do, use the "report this ad" button at the bottom of the listing.
It goes without saying that listings advertising any of the above will be removed, and the member who put it up will most likely disappear too.

We are giving away a signed copy of Caroline Jenkins new book 'How to be the Perfect Pack Leader' to whoever uploads the best puppy photo between now and Friday 11th December.
To be in with a chance of winning you need to tag your photos with the word "puppycomp". You will see a box for tags when you go to upload a photo.
You can use as many tags as you like, but if "puppycomp" isn't one of them we may not see the photo and will therefore not enter it into the competition, so please don't forget to tag it.
Entries will be judged by the Sponsor a Puppy team from Guide Dogs UK, and the winner will be announced on Monday 13th December.
Good luck and happy snapping!
P.S. The Sponsor a Puppy team are well worth following on twitter @GuideDogsUKPups

The following is the UK governments response to our petition to do something about puppy farming:
Thank you for your e-petition.
The Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999, which amended and extended the provisions of the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973 and the Breeding of Dogs Act 1991, already provides protection for dogs used in breeding establishments. Under this legislation, any person who keeps a breeding establishment for dogs at any premises and carries on at those premises a business of breeding dogs for sale must obtain a licence from the local authority. Those people who are not in the business of breeding dogs for sale, so called “hobby breeders”, and produce less than five litters in any period of 12 months do not need to obtain a licence.
The local authority has the discretion whether to grant a licence and, before doing so, must satisfy itself that the animals are provided with suitable accommodation, food, water and bedding material; are adequately exercised and visited at suitable intervals; and that all reasonable precautions are taken to prevent and control the spread of diseases amongst dogs. Local authorities are responsible for enforcing the legislation. In addition to ensuring that dogs are kept in suitable accommodation, the law also places limits on the frequency and timing of breeding from a bitch. Bitches cannot be mated before they are a year old, must have no more than six litters in a lifetime and can only have one litter every 12 months. Breeding records must be kept to ensure that these requirements are adhered to. Puppies that are produced at licensed breeding establishments can only be sold at those premises or a licensed pet shop.
In addition to the specific law on dog breeding there is also the Animal Welfare Act 2006, which places on those who own or are responsible for animals a duty to ensure their animals’ welfare. This includes owners and keepers of dog breeding establishments. Failure to provide for the welfare of an animal could lead to a fine of up £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.
This duty of care will help those who enforce the law, such as local authorities and the RSPCA, to take action when an animal is being treated contrary to its welfare needs, even though it is not immediately suffering. The duty means that all domestic or captive animals, including dogs kept at breeding establishments, must be cared for in accordance with the best animal management practices. It enables those responsible for enforcing animal welfare standards to work with the owners and keepers to raise standards and, in cases where the owner or keeper is not prepared to provide the care that the animal requires, to take action through the courts.

Hi all,
As you all know by now, we have redesigned the showcases to hopefully be a lot more useful to everybody.
The main aim was to get rid of the horrible empty white boxes and get more information into a much neater space. I think it's safe to say we have achieved that!
The second aim was to make it much easier to get in touch with each other, so right at the centre of everybody's profile is a comment box, and the instant message, k9 mail and make friends buttons are much more prominent.
The only thing about the comments is that they are public messages, so keep the private stuff for k9 mail and the instant messenger! Don't worry too much if something embarrassing slips in, you can delete any comment on your own showcase just by clicking the "delete" link under every comment.
Another new feature is the friends list at the bottom left of every showcase. We did this so that you can see who has something in common with the people you share interests with, making it easier to meet new friends.
One thing that I really wanted to see the end of was the convoluted process for updating your showcase info (dog's name, age, breed and a bit about yourself). Previously you had to go to my account >> info >> showcase, and that was only if you knew it was there!
Now there is a button underneath your info on the left:

that will get you there in one click. We will shortly be putting similar buttons in to upload photos and videos, and to write a blog.
We really hope you like these changes and find them useful. Our aim is to bring dog owners together so they can make new friends and share experiences, and we think these changes will make that easier.
Please let us know what you think, and any questions you have either by commenting on this blog, leaving a comment at the main site blog, or leaving a comment on my showcase.

There are a couple of things to consider if you would like to take a photo of your dog that would be suitable for going up to the top of each page.
Firstly the background. If the colours in the background and the colours in the dog are totally different, it makes it much easier to remove the background. davehelsbury's Solly as a puppy is an excellent example of this.
Secondly, you need to consider how much of your dog is in the photo, and where he or she is cut off.
As long as the only parts of the dog that can't be seen in the photo are to the top or the bottom, there is no problem. However, if the cut-off is to either side, then the photo will not be suitable.
Photos that show the whole dog are of course suitable.
A couple of examples of what I mean are shown below.

CUT OFF TO THE RIGHT - NOT SUITABLE

CUT OFF TO THE LEFT - NOT SUITABLE

CUT OFF TO THE TOP AND BOTTOM - SUITABLE
I hope that all makes sense, and that you all take lots of great photos of your k9s!

To see all showcases from a particular country, just select the country from the drop-down menu, leave the username search box blank, and click the search button.
You can also use the username box to narrow the search. For example, you can change the drop-down to United States and put the letter 'm' in the box. This will give you every member from the USA with 'm' in their username.
If a country is selected from the drop-down list and you click the search button, all showcases you view will be from that country until you change the drop-down to "Any" and click search again.
For instance, if you select Puerto Rico from the list of countries and click search, you will get a list of all members from Puerto Rico. If you then click "All", "New" or "Who's online" in the tabs above the search box, you will only see all, new or online members from Puerto Rico.
In order to see members from any country, you will need to change the country to "Any" then click search.
It is handy to remember that whatever country is displayed in the drop-down menu takes precedence over everything else.
